Wild Reindeer spotting in North East Iceland.

Wild Icelandic reindeer / Caribou can be surprisingly difficult to find. Even though they are large animals, Iceland’s wide valleys, mountains and open highland landscapes give them endless places to disappear into. Some herds are small, others much larger, and finding them is never simply a matter of driving to a fixed location.

This private expedition begins early, often around sunrise, when recent sightings and the day’s conditions point us toward the most promising areas. Your guide uses local knowledge, information from the land and an understanding of reindeer behaviour to form a plan—but nature always has the final say. We consider the weather, wind direction, visibility and the movements of the herd, and guests are welcome to be part of that process.

The search can take us along remote tracks and mountain roads, through rugged valleys and across open landscapes. We use binoculars and spotting scopes to look for reindeer and signs of their movement. Hours may pass before we see a herd, but that is part of the experience: travelling through remarkable, little-visited Icelandic nature, with waterfalls, birdlife, valleys and unexpected discoveries along the way.

If we locate reindeer, the expedition becomes a careful wildlife observation exercise. We make a plan that respects the animals and the landscape, using the wind and terrain to avoid disturbing them. Depending on the conditions and the wishes of the group, we may continue by Super Jeep, buggy, snowmobile or on foot. Our aim is never to rush, chase or interfere with the herd, but to position ourselves quietly and observe these remarkable animals in their natural environment.

A Private Reindeer Expedition is for guests who enjoy the uncertainty and excitement of a real day in the field. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the goal is always the same: to learn about reindeer, search for them responsibly, and experience Iceland’s wild, remote landscapes in a way few visitors do.

Your tailor-made expedition

No two reindeer expeditions are the same. Depending on the season, access, weather and what you would like from the day, the plan may include Super Jeep travel, hiking, buggies or snowmobiles. Tell us whether you are interested in wildlife photography, landscape photography, a relaxed day of observation or a more active adventure, and we will build the right plan together.
